Abstract

Sublinear Translation Technique in the Ottoman Translation Tradition
When the history of translation is examined, it is seen that civilizations and cultures, during their interactions with each other, sometimes unilaterally and sometimes mutually transfer the works reflecting their knowledge. As a result of this transfer, civilizations also contribute to each other's development. As a matter of fact, the transfer of the knowledge of Anatolian, Phoenician and Egyptian civilizations through translations played a major role in the formation and development of Greek culture and civilization. The influence of the Greeks, who synthesized the knowledge accumulated as a result of this transfer with their own perspective, on the development of Arab-Islamic culture and civilization was also through translations. The Ottoman Civilization, being a part of the Islamic Civilization, inherited the Arab-Islamic tradition in the theory and practice of the concept of "translation" itself, as in many other matters. Some translators who were involved in translation activities in the Ottoman period and who expressed their views on translation in the prefaces of their translations expressed this explicitly and some implicitly. In this study, the translation theory of Ottoman translators will be presented through the duality known as literal translation and meaning translation in the Ottoman period translation tradition. General information will be given about the sublinear translation technique, which is one of the reflections of literal translation in Ottoman Period translations. The texts prepared with this translation technique will be presented. The reasons why these texts were prepared with the inline translation technique will be emphasized, and the formal features of the texts prepared with the inline translation technique will be pointed out.

Keywords
