Abstract
Unknown Uses of "Mul" in Classical Turkish Poetry
Most of the words and concepts used in classical
Turkish poetry have wide meaning layers and rich
connotations. Classical poets attributed new meanings to
the words they used in their poems, taking into account the
coherence among the other words they used in the poem.
This situation has become indispensable in the tradition in
terms of bringing depth and richness of meaning to poetry
and making a difference to poetry. In this article, the use of
the word “mul”, known only as “wine” today is discussed
with the meanings of “flower” and “medicine”. In the
study, firstly, dictionaries were examined and the meaning
(s) of the word “mul” was determined. Later in the article,
the examples of the word “mul” given the meaning of
“wine” in the poems are discussed; afterwards, examples
of the other mentioned uses of the word “mul” were
examined, based on the details of meaning given other than
“wine” in dictionaries such as “-Burhân-ı Katı, Mo’în and
Steingass-”. Thus, all the layers of meaning that can be
detected in the classical poetry texts of “mul” are dealt
with in order and explained through sample couplets.
