Abstract
A Divan Poet Following Tradition in the Twentieth Century: Seyyid Ali Sânih and the Divan of the Voices of Sânih
As raised in the twentieth century, it is evident that there are poets who wrote poems that are a continuation of the classical literature tradition, albeit in a small number. These poets, who wrote their works in a period when the influence of Divan literature was diminished and writing poems with prosody was almost completely abandoned, contributed to the continuation of our classical literature, in which we conveyed the feelings and thoughts of our nation for six centuries, even on an individual basis. It is very important for the history of Turkish culture and literature to unearth these works in the light of the information obtained on their existence. One of these poets is Çekmegelizade Sayyid Ali, who was born in Malatya in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and in the last years of the Ottoman Empire, and used the pen names Sânih and İlhami in his poems. In this article, information about the life, literary personality and works of Seyyid Ali Sânih, who grew up in the first half of the twentieth century and wrote a divan in this field, is given. The content elements of the divan, which the author named the Sânih’s Voice, and its formal features such as types and forms of verse were mentioned. The work obtained from the personal library of Mehmet Selami Çekmegil, the grandson of the poet, as a single copy, is 89 leaves. In this study, in which Sayyid Ali Sânih and his work were introduced, examples of the verses he wrote to the divan poets he was influenced by, and couplets that were mentioned in terms of form, content and artistic value were presented.
