Şahkerim Kudayberdiulı who lived between 1858 and
1931 is one of the pioneers of Kazakh Literature. Kudayberdiulı,
who is taught Persian by his mother in his
childhood, is an admirer of eastern literature. Among his
poems, the classical beloved character is seen in the poems
inspired by Hafız-ı Şirazi. He is also a follower of the
western literature. Moreover, he reads Byron, Lermontov,
Pushkin and he is affected by Hafız- Şirazi, Firdevsi,
Nevai and Fuzuli.
Şahkerim Kudayberdiulı is a poet of love. He went to
Mecca for hajj in 1905. After this journey, he found the
way to reach real love and he decided to live in seclusion
in the peak of a mountain far from his hometown for the
rest of his life. Thanks to the poems of Şahkerim Kudayberdiulı,
Kazakh readers have been introduced to the lover
character with which they were not familiar before. The
similes and expressions about love in his poems can be
found in Divan Poets’ works which he took as an example
but time to time the effects of Kazakh culture reflecting
Şahkerim’s style can be also observed.
