Abstract
A Translation Of Muhteşem-i Kâşânî’s Karbala Dirge An Unknown Translation By Manastırlı Mehmed Rif’at And The Place of This Translation in The Tradition of Ottoman Translation
Biographical sources record that Manastırlı Mehmed
Rif'at (dod. 1907), one of the late Ottoman poets, has a
Dîvânçe. Since this Dîvânçe or Mecmû'a-i Eş'âr Mehmed
Rif'at was not published while he was alive, and the
manuscript is probably in draft form, it has not survived.
However, a manuscript registered in the Istanbul
University Rare Works Library Catalog bears traces of this
lost Dîvânçe/Mecmû'a-i Eş'âr by Mehmed Rif'at. The
poem in this manuscript, written in the form of "Terkîbbend"
verse, is the Karbala dirge of Rif'at mentioned in the
biographies. In this study, the transcribed text and
intralingual translation of the elegy of Mehmed Rif'at of
Manastır are given. Since this poem is also a verse
translation Karbala dirge of the Persian poet Muhteşem-i
Kâşânî (dod. 1588), apart from the transcripted text, the
dirge has been compared with the Persian original and the place of the text in the Ottoman translation tradition has
been evaluated.
