Abstract

An Evaluation Regarding the Tradition of Alexander Stories: Alexander Romance Kind Works and Nizami's İskendername
The most important narration among Canonical Alexander narrations is an originally lost narration that has Greek, Latin, Assyrian, Armenian, Ethiopian, Hebrew variants. This narration is called Pseudo-Callisthenes because it belonged to Callisthenes who joined the campaigns of Alexander. During the transition period between late Antique century and Middle Age, this story led to the creation of “Alexander Romance”. Inter-geographical and historical journey of the Romances which were written in many European language gained a different identity when it reached to Eastern literature. Hebrew, Armenian and Assyrian variants of “Alexander Romance” are works of early period that were created 5th, 6th centuries. By the 11th century, Firedevsi had handled this subject for the first time in Eastern literature. However, this work reached an entirely different level through Nizâmî’s Mesnevi which is quite exclusive and sizeable. From this point on, Alexander was not an extraordinary hero but a subject chosen by Allah for prophethood. It is understood from Nizâmî’s own declarations that he was aware of Greek, Armenian and Assyrian sources. However, it is obvious that he did not follow that prior path. Nizâmî’s text is an important cornerstone in inter-cultural circulation of the story. In this work, Alexander Romance and Nizâmî’s İskendername are analyzed in a comparative sense. The literary, philosophical, religious, mythological, epic elements that constitutes the cultural texture of the work is specially emphasized.
