Abstract
The Progress of the Ottoman Literary Patronage Tradition Based on Qasidas Presented to the Rulers
In this article, we take a closer look at the historical developments in the Ottoman literary patronage trandition based on qasidas written by the Ottoman poets for the administrators of their times. To this end, we make use of published divans in the Ottoman period as well as as of yet unpublished texts that are prepared as theses. This study enables us to answer and provide an overall evaluation of questions such as what the patron status of Ottoman administrators was, how popular they were in the poetry market and which administrators were more active and involved as patrons in their period. We find that, when evaluated on the basis of the poems of praise in divans, the Ottoman court supported and influened such endavours in each and every century despite the proportional changes in its involvement in different centuries.
