Abstract

A New Copy (Nushah) of Hassan’s Mihr u Mushtari And Its Contributions to the Known Copy
Mihr u Mah and Mihr u Mushtari stories have an important place among the classical love mathnawis in Eastern literature. Iranian literature is the source of these stories which include the personification of celestial bodies and the use of their names as human names. Mihr u Mushtari is the work of Assâr-ı Tebrîzî (ö.784/1382), one of the poets of the Jalairs’ period. This work, which was written with the desire to reveal a different mathnawi in terms of subject, had been also received interest in Turkish Literature and translated into Turkish by some poets. It is accepted that the reign of Murad II (1421-1451) is a prominent period for the development of the genre of mathnawi which the first examples of it began to be given as from the 11-13th centuries. While many original and translated works were written in the mathnawi genre in this period, translated works were more popular in love mathnawis. The work of Hassân, known as the first of the Mihr u Mushtari translations, was also written during this period and presented to Murad II as in Şeyhî’s Husrav u Shirin and Cemali’s Huma vu Humayun. It is known that there has been a copy (nushah) of the work in the National Library of France. Recently, a new copy (nushah) of Mihr u Mushtari was found in Bavarian State Library. In this article, the new copy of Mihr u Mushtari was introduced and the contributions of the new copy to the known copy were emphasized. In this sense, the general and complementary features of the known copy of it was also underlined.
