Abstract
A Phrase Of Indian Style In The Classical Turkish Poetry: Gül-be-Çeşm (Rose To Eye)
Dictionaries and commentaries play important role in
better understanding of Classical Turkish Poetry. These
works of the authors who lived in the period when the poem
was written also are the primary sources in for Classical
Turkish poems. Especially in order to understand the
couplets of the Indian Style (Sebk-i Hindî), it is necessary
to examine the periodical dictionaries and commentaries in
detail. Because poets aiming at incomprehensibility in
Indian Style, they use unusual words to cover the
meaning. For this, they bring together various words an
obtains new structures. Indian Style includes many.
One of these phrases is “gül-be-çeşm (rose to eye)”. This
phrase, compiled of two words “gül (rose)” and “çeşm
(eye)” in Persian, has been used by the poets with the
meanings of luster in the eye, blindness and eye spot.
Contrary to the original meaning of the words in the
structure, this meaning was preferred by poets who wanted
to emphasize pain and pessimism.
In this article, the meaning of phrase is derived from the
words “gül (rose)” and “çeşm (eye)” is examined and
examples from Turkish and Persian poetry are given, thus,
the historical development of this phrase is revealed.
